Dr Harry Harvey is a BRC Fellow within the University of Birmingham's Biomedical Research Centre and has been a part of the Bioencapsulation and Microbiome Interface Research Lab since 2024.

He completed his PhD in molecular microbiology at the University of Nottingham in 2021, and has conducted research in environmental, food, and biomedical microbiology.

His current work focuses on developing probiotic formulations to treat and prevent oral diseases. These conditions affect more than half of adults and can sometimes contribute to wider health problems elsewhere in the body.

Sarah Corrigan is a Research Technician with over 15 years of experience at the University of Birmingham. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science and has expertise in molecular biology and protein expression. 

Since joining the Biomaterials & Microbiome Interface Research Lab in 2021, her work has focused on developing probiotic delivery systems to support intestinal and oral health. 

Yijia is a PhD student who joined the lab in 2024. His research explores the role of strictly anaerobic bacteria in maintaining microbiome health, with a specific focus on developing formulation strategies for Anaerobutyricum hallii as a next-generation probiotic.

Nneka joined the lab in 2024 on a jointly supervised PhD project (with Dr Michelle Buckner). Her research focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the gut microbiome and the development of synthetic community (SynCom) model systems to mechanistically investigate how gut commensal bacteria share and disseminate AMR genes.

Emily is a PhD student funded by the MRC AIM DTP and joined the group in the fall of last year.  Her project is focused on the oral microbiome, periodontitis and developing an encapsulated system that can deliver a healthy oral microbiome in the form of a biofilm; translating insights from faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to enable oral microbiome transplantation (OMT).

Esther is a PhD student funded by the University of Birmingham and joined the group in the fall of last year.  Her project is focused on personalised gut microbiome modulation, specifically looking at developing encapsulated prebiotics that can selectively support the restoration of beneficial bacteria depleted in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Isobel is a 1st year PhD student funded by Bowel Research UK. Her project focuses on faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), specifically looking at the processing and storage methods and identifying routes to optimise them to create a new treatment option for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients.

Dr Phuong Ling Ta was supported by an EPSRC Healthcare Technologies award to develop innovative formulation strategies that improve the viability of next-generation probiotics.
